First Stop: New York State 9/29/10

Today I paid a visit to Fort William Henry, on the shores of Lake George, NY. This fort was built by the British in 1755 and destroyed by the French in 1757, during the French & Indian War. The present compound is a recreation of the original fort and a popular tourist destination.

Fort William Henry gained world-wide renown when it served as the setting for James Fenimore Cooper's novel, "The Last of the Mohicans." Although the book was set in the Adirondacks, the 1992 movie version was actually filmed in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

There are special activities in the fort for children, like joining the regiment and sifting for objects in a pretend archaeology dig.

Who knew that learning history could be so much fun?

Now I'm off to Australia. See you soon!
